Peggy Dean is probably one of my favorite inspirations as far as brush lettering, watercolors, and line drawing goes. I’ve taken several of her classes and have got my feet wet using her watercolor classes. I also have one of her books on brush lettering. She’s such a lovely person and I have learned a ton just from a few videos and following her on instagram (@thepigeonletters).
She was on the Today show today, highlighting the fact that she teaches on Skillshare and can work from home. It’s my dream to be able to work completely from home, although I’m thankful for the job I have that is consistent. I’d love to someday just do artistic things and get paid for it, but that’s not in the cards right now.
I wanted to share the Today video though and hopefully you will be inspired too. I’m not planning on giving up. I’ll keep learning and growing and some day, I hope my dream will come alive.
Lessons I learned from Peggy Dean
Just from following Peggy on social media, the big take away I have learned is that you have to find your own style. If you work hard, you will go places. But it takes work. Peggy is often encouraging her “followers” that we shouldn’t compare ourselves to others or try to be someone else. Instead, we should find our niche and run with it. I’m thankful that over the last 6 months, I’ve been inspired by those comments.
I enjoy creating digital art, invitations, flyers, posters, and any other digital creation. I love that I’m not boxed into any one kind of art, but enjoy exploring and trying new things. It’s in those “new things” that I have learned so much about myself. I think that’s how we all must live–with an open mind, willing to try things that seem hard. When we take the risk, we learn and grow and change. I love using Skillshare and Lynda.com for these reasons. If I hadn’t watched the videos and tried, I would have never known I could do it at all. I encourage you to try something new too.
